Welcome to Year 2

Welcome back. We hope you had a lovely Christmas. This was not the way we hoped to start the term but we hope that you are all keeping safe and well and look forwards to welcoming you all back into school fully as soon as possible.

This term in English we will be starting with instructions. We will: Listen to instructions and answer questions; tell a set of instructions from memory; use imperative verbs; use the subordinating conjunctions ‘when’ and ‘if’; summarise key points; box up for purpose; identify features of instructions and write our own instructions. We will also be thinking about information texts and writing our own, considering the use of ‘if’ as a fronted adverbial.

We will then go on to a non-fiction text. This will allow the children to explore their use of powerful verbs, adverbials and complex sentences.

In maths we will be starting the term with money. Recognising coins and notes and adding and subtracting them. Finally moving on to giving change.  We then move onto a unit on statistics (using graphs, tables and tally charts) followed by a unit on 2D and 3D shapes. We will finish the term with a unit of work on multiplication and division where the children will recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers and problem solving.

In Science, the children are learning about things that are living, dead and have never been alive. They will explore what ‘alive’ means and discuss the origins of certain materials. After half term we will be learning about animals and their habitats.

In geography, we are learning about the Wonders of the World. This unit will give the children an appreciation of the  world by introducing natural and man-made, as well as ancient and modern.

In history, we will be answering the question ‘Who are our local heroes?’

The children will learn about the lives of some of the most significant people in the history of their locality. The unit will support the children in gaining an

understanding of the breadth of contributions people can make in order to become significant.

RE lessons start this term by learning about Muslims and what they believe. After half term we will learning about the importance of Easter in the Christian calendar.

In Art and DT we will start the term with printmaking and will then move on to creating freestanding structures for DT.

Music will explore Latin music  and music from ‘mixed styles’ working within musical appreciation and discussing all the musical elements.

Computing will focus on two elements – creativity and computer networks. In creativity, the children will be using computers to take and edit photographs. In computer networks, we will use computers to research a topic.

PSHE this term will cover two topics. The first topic will be about sharing feelings and discovering the different responses to feelings. The second topic is all about keeping safe and considers secrets and whether they are good or bad.
