Welcome to Year 2

It was lovely to see some parents for Meet the Teacher this week but if you were unable to attend, please click here to see my presentation.

In MATHS, we will begin by looking at Place Value, Addition and Subtraction. The children will recap their work from Year 1 and begin to look at place value charts, understanding of mental methods and representing numbers in numerals and words.

In ENGLISH, we will be looking at ‘Stuck’ by Oliver Jeffers. We will be thinking about our use of capital letters, conjunctions to join ideas and our use of punctuation including exclamation marks. The children will be given plenty of opportunity to use the text as model, invent their own stories and discuss their work with their peers and adults.

In SCIENCE for the first half term we will be measuring and representing data. It would be useful if you could discuss with your child what you measure at home, it could be clocks for time, scales for cooking, all sorts. After half term we will be looking at the human body and identifying the main parts of the body and what they are used for.

In HISTORY, we will be looking at how life has changed from our Grandparent’s childhood. We will look at daily life, schools, toys and shops. If anyone has any examples of old toys which you think would be interesting for the children to look at we would love to borrow them. It would also be great if anyone has a Grandparent (or Great!) who may like to record a short video telling us about how their experiences differ to modern life – please get in touch with the school office if you may be able to help.

In GEOGRAPHY, we will be learning about our local area and what makes it special. We will think about building types and natural and man made features. We will look at reading maps of different scales and think about the places we visit on a regular basis.

In PSHE, I will give the children plenty of opportunity for reflection and self-reflection as we get back into a normal routine. Our lessons will look at responsibility and keeping ourselves safe and healthy.

PE – Our PE sessions this half term will be on Thursdays (Mrs Meek) and Fridays (Mr Jacobson). Please come into school in your PE kits on these days.

READING – We will benchmark on a regular basis, complete whole class reading activities and have an individual read on a weekly basis. Please record any reading completed at home in the reading record.

SPELLINGS – I will update spelling lists within the reading records on Mondays. We will test for these spellings the following Monday.

If the children complete any home learning related to our topics, I am more than happy for them to bring their work in to share with the rest of the class.

I am always happy to talk about your child’s learning and if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me through the office or write a note in the reading records.

Miss Christie
