Welcome to Year 2
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and were able to stay happy and safe! I am really looking forward to working at Loddiswell Primary School and getting to know all of your children!
In MATHS, we will spend most of the half term working on multiplication and division. The children will recap their work from Year 1 and begin to look at using the multiplication and division symbols accurately; we will also look at statistics towards the end of the term where the children will begin to explore different ways of recording and reading data.
In ENGLISH, we will be looking at ‘Bonkers about Beetroot’ by Cath Jones. We will be thinking about our use of capital letters, conjunctions to join ideas and the use of high-quality vocabulary choices to create humour and tension. The children will be given plenty of opportunities to use the text as model, invent their own stories and discuss their work with their peers and adults.
In SCIENCE, we will be using some of our measuring and recording skills while we study the weather. We will see what changes from season to season and also look at some extreme weathers.
In HISTORY, we will be researching and learning about some of the greatest explorers! We will create class studies on chosen explorers and will explore timelines of their life and how this fits in with our class timeline and what the children have previously learnt.
In GEOGRAPHY, we will be learning about people and their communities. We will be exploring how countries differ including both the human and physical features. We will also, be deepening our knowledge by using world maps to locate and name continents and oceans.
In PSHE, I will give the children plenty of opportunity for reflection and open discussions as we continue to get back into a normal routine. Our lessons will focus on relationships, which will include our feelings and emotions, what it means to have healthy friendships and the importance of valuing difference.
PE – Our PE sessions this half term will be on Thursdays (Mrs Meek) and Fridays (Mr Jacobson). Please come into school in your PE kits on these days.
READING – We will benchmark on a regular basis, complete whole class reading activities and have an individual read on a weekly basis. Please record any reading completed at home in the reading record.
SPELLINGS – I will update spelling lists within the reading records on Mondays. We will test for these spellings the following Monday.
If the children complete any home learning related to our topics, I am more than happy for them to bring their work in to share with the rest of the class. I am always happy to talk about your child’s learning and if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me through the office or write a note in the reading records.
